The NSW Opposition has called on the Minns Labor Government to review the funding being delivered to improve the state’s roads after more than 200 fatalities this year.
Shadow Minister for Transport and Roads Natalie Ward said the issue needs to be immediately addressed with 18 deaths occurring in the past month alone.
“The latest figures are up on last year, which paints a shocking picture that the Minns Labor Government has dropped the ball when it comes to keeping our motorists safe,” Ms Ward said.
“NSW took a hard hit when the Commonwealth axed 17 of our projects in its infrastructure pipeline review and the Premier didn’t do enough to stand up for what our residents need.
“Now we are seeing the impacts of that decision and the overall lack of funding, upgrades and maintenance, and it is literally costing people’s lives.”
Almost two thirds of the deaths this year happened outside of Sydney.
Shadow Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Dave Layzell said it highlights the lack of focus on road safety in the bush.
“The road network is a lifeline for our country communities, who use it for freight and travel every single say,” Mr Layzell said.
“Those residents are especially feeling the impact of this, and the Minns Labor Government needs to remember it has a responsibility to keep all road users safe, not just those who live in the city.
“The current level of support needs to be examined and the Minns Labor Government needs to continue to build on the $19.4 billion regional road and transport infrastructure pipeline that was delivered by the former Liberal and Nationals Government.”
